Background of the study
Hashtags on Twitter have become powerful tools for semantic expression and social mobilization in digital spaces. In Nigeria, the use of hashtags extends beyond categorization to actively shaping and shifting semantic meanings in public discourse (Afolabi, 2023). These hashtag‑based semantic shifts represent a unique intersection of language innovation and social commentary. The study examines how users manipulate hashtags to convey complex ideas, emotions, and cultural narratives in a succinct manner. Through the interplay of digital affordances and creative expression, hashtags are not only markers of trending topics but also vehicles for semantic evolution (Ibrahim, 2024). This research investigates the mechanisms behind these shifts, considering factors such as context, audience engagement, and platform dynamics. By comparing various Twitter trends, the study aims to reveal how hashtag usage fosters new meanings, challenges established semantic norms, and contributes to the broader discourse on language change in the digital age (Okafor, 2023). The findings will provide insights into the relationship between social media practices and semantic transformation, contributing to both linguistic theory and digital communication studies (Chukwu, 2024).
Statement of the problem
While hashtag usage has been widely recognized for its role in social mobilization, its impact on semantic shifts in Nigerian Twitter discourse has not been thoroughly investigated. Existing research often focuses on the sociopolitical aspects of hashtags rather than the semantic transformations they induce (Adebayo, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how digital platforms facilitate the evolution of meaning in everyday communication. Additionally, without a comparative analysis of different Twitter trends, the nuanced ways in which hashtags reshape semantic fields remain unclear (Obi, 2023). This study seeks to fill these gaps by systematically examining hashtag‑based semantic shifts in Nigerian social media discourse.

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the understudied area of hashtag‑based semantic shifts in Nigerian social media. The research will provide valuable insights for linguists, digital media analysts, and policymakers by elucidating how digital practices influence language meaning and social communication (Afolabi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses solely on hashtag‑based semantic shifts on Twitter among Nigerian users. It does not consider other social media platforms or offline semantic practices, ensuring a concentrated analysis of the specified phenomenon.
